I recently had the pleasure of working with a new team of people, the commission was for the Fox and Rose lingerie website and involved photographing a large range of products for a website update. It was also an opportunity for me to work with the website owner Karen, and new to me, makeup artist Becky (purplhaze) and model Emelie. The location was Karen’s lovely home and Karen gave us free reign, brave Karen.
The team gelled quickly and we worked fast from 9am to 6pm (six being the must finish time), we finished the last product at a couple of minutes past six making a very productive day.
Because of the speed that we needed to work I used available light, some off camera fill flash and a couple of reflectors. My cameras were the Fuji XT1 and the X100 both are excellent in these lighting conditions and were used handheld.
The first half our or so was planning the order to shoot the products in and choosing locations, a team effort. Then Becky got to work with makeup and hair, I assume from the laughter that model and makeup artist were getting along well. While they were working I set up a 6ft reflector on a stand and I mounted a canon 430ex flash on a lighting stand. The plan was to use the reflector and natural light where possible adding flash bounced from the reflector if needed. The flashgun would be triggered by a ST-e2 trigger in the XT1, my flash kit needs changing as the Canon/Fuji combo only gives me a 60th synch speed, very poor. For a slower shoot I would have used my Elinchrom studio flash.
Once we started the shoot flowed well, aided by an eagle eyed Becky keeping a watch on makeup. Becky also went the extra mile or five by assisting the client plan the flow of products. A quick snack at midday kindly supplied by Karen was followed by furniture moving and photograph making. Then all too soon we were finished.
We all came away with an understanding of how we work together and I am looking forward to the next, shoot where we will have time to experiment more. Working with the three ladies was a pleasure, a good day.
Here are a few images from the 800 image shoot, some in black and white because I like B/W.
